Life's Essentials: Air, Water and Nutrition
You can only live a few minutes without air, a few days without water, and a few weeks without the proper nutrition. Air, water and nutrition are truly Life's Essentials.
Every health, wellness and antiaging program should include:
-Air and Water Filtration to reduce the toxin load on the body.
The air in our homes can be 2-5 times more polluted than the outside air due to outsourcing gases and fumes from the paint, carpet and other building supplies, bacteria, dust, mold, and many other pollutants. Respiratory disease is on the rise, especially in our children. We can't always control the air on the outside, but we can control the air inside, which is, of course, where most of us spend the majority of our time.
Our water is chlorinated to kill harmful bacteria, but then we drink the chlorinated water. It doesn't make good sense. Additionally, our water supply is contaminated with pesticides and herbicides; it contains pharmaceutical drugs like hormones and antibiotics, and metals like lead and mercury. There is no new water on this planet; it just gets recycled. Bottled water provides for unchecked environmental pollution, it is mostly unregulated, and is clearly not the answer.
-Proper Nutrition and Supplementation.
Most of us don't eat anything close to a well balanced diet. Did you have your 5-9 fruits and vegetables today? Even if you do try to eat properly, the nutritive value of our food supply has markedly diminished. The food we ingest is not the same as our parents and grandparents consumed. It is important to supplement now more than ever before.
More than a decade ago, two Harvard Medical School MD's (Robert Fletcher and Kathleen Fairfield) published an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA 6/19/02) telling us that all adults should supplement vitamins to help prevent chronic illnesses. Some call it expensive urine. I believe it is more prudent to optimize the body's innate self-healing potential. A recent study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association (The Physician's Health Study II-11/14/2012) found that intake of a daily multivitamin can reduce your risk of overall cancer. A quality multivitamin, multimineral, and herbal supplement is crucial to correct dietary deficiencies.
Fiber is often overlooked and ignored in our diets. Fiber normalizes bowel movements, aids in weight management, and can help reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels. A nine year study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2011, revealed a 22% enhancement of longevity to those who just consumed the recommended amounts of fiber (see Wall Street Journal 2/15/11 and Archives of Internal Medicine 6/14/11). Colon health is paramount to cleanse and detoxify the body.
Inflammation has been associated with many chronic diseases including cancer, heart disease, Alzhiemer's disease, arthritis, diabetes, autoimmune disease, and many, many others. Chronic inflammation from free radical damage and destruction of the cells of our body stresses the immune system and causes "Oxidative Stress." Our body uses antioxidant enzymes and dietary antioxidant vitamins and minerals to protect the cells. Reducing inflammation which ultimately reduces the oxidative stress on your body is key to the antiaging formula. Targeted nutraceuticals can be added to enhance immunity, to reduce inflammation, and to promote longevity.
